Eurogroup to examine budgetary situation in Germany, France, Italy and Portugal

Brussels, 06/07/2001 (Agence Europe) - On Monday, from 19h00, the Finance Ministers of Eurogroup, meeting under the presidency of Didier Reynders, will devote a large part of their work to examining the budgetary situation of four countries (Italy, France, Portugal and Germany). They are expected to grant special attention to the worsening of budgetary deficit in France (EUR 28.1 billion end May 2001 as opposed to EUR 24.3 billion one year earlier) and in Germany. Italy (which has changed government) and Portugal (which has a new Finance Minister) will present their new budgetary programmes. The Finance Ministers will also discuss, in the presence of Director General of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the economic situation of the euro zone. Two "structural" issues are on the agenda: - the effect of national taxation on the rate of activity; - and the state of play of public administrations with respect to the changeover to the euro.
