Brussels, 06/07/2001 (Agence Europe) - In response to a question by a journalist on the possible infringement by the Netherlands in the context of European Social Fund (ESF) intervention and an eventual reimbursement of EUR 200 million requested by the Commission to allow the sums incorrectly spent to be recovered, Andrew Fielding, spokesman for Commissioner Anna Diamantopoulou, said that the Commission services will send a letter next week to the Dutch authorities for further information. The Commission will possibly confirm the obligation, or otherwise, to pay back the amounts paid out. For now, we do not have any figure for the amount demanded, he said, but the Commission may demand a relatively substantial amount if the infringement is proven. If the Parliament requests, Anna Diamantopoulou will go to explain the situation, said the spokesman in answer to another question.
