Strasbourg, 06/07/2001 (Agence Europe) - During Thursday's extraordinary session the European Parliament adopted a resolution on Beijing's application to host the 2008 Olympic Games and thereby invites the International Olympic Committee to set out the guidelines including the overall obligation for countries applying to host the games to respect human rights and democratic principles. The Parliament «deplores the fact that the People's Republic of China flagrantly violates fundamental human, civil and political rights such as freedom of worship and consequently considers that this major failing in addition to the repression of the people of Tibet, Ouigouristan and southern Mongolia makes it inappropriate to have the 2008 Olympic Games held in Beijing».
