Brussels, 20/06/2001 (Agence Europe) - The Union and China have finalised their bilateral negotiations on the accession conditions for this country to the World Trade Organisation, eight days before the continuation of multilateral talks in Geneva. The agreement, to which the European Commissioner for Trade Pascal Lamy and his Chinese counterpart Shi Guangsheng put the final touches during a finally political head-to-head lasting nearly three hours, this Wednesday in Brussels, confirmed the concessions enshrined in their agreement last year and answers the main issues, most sensitive, that had been left pending. The political desire shared by the EU and China to lift the barriers to the accession of "this country" to the WTO bored fruition, said Mr Lamy, while adding: the road is clear for China to make its entry into the WTO in the coming months. EUROPE will return to this story.
