EP members for strengthening of anti-doping

Brussels, 20/06/2001 (Agence Europe) - Around thirty Italian members of the European Parliament belonging to various political groups have written to the European Commissioner Viviane Reding, responsible in particular for culture and sport, by drawing her attention to the latest serious events linked to the world of cycling in certain Member States, including Italy (allusion to "police operation" over recent days during the Giro and a few months ago in France: Ed.) and which lead to a rethink over the scope of the doping phenomenon, which pollutes the sport in Europe. The MEPs call on Mr Reding to intervene to put an immediate end to EU financing given to the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA, which has its seat in Lausanne) until the International Olympic Committee (IOC), which until now avoids intervening in a decisive manner, shows that finally stops underestimating the problem. The European policy "provides no concrete solution" to prevent the spread of this "dangerous" phenomenon, regret the MEPs.
