Brussels, 12/06/2001 (Agence Europe) - On 8 June, in a declaration on behalf of the EU, the Swedish Presidency welcomed the convening, on 2 June, of the summit by the IGAD Committee on the Sudan, in the hope it would help to make up for the lack of progress in the peace process. The EU mainly encourages Kenya, which chairs the IGAD Committee, to do everything in its power to rekindle the peace process, and welcomes the commitment taken by the Sudanese government to put an end to air raids. The EU, while insisting on the active role that IGAD must continue to play "at high political level" so that an end is put to the war, thus stresses that "even more important is a firm political determination of both the Government of Sudan and the SPLM/A to find a peaceful solution to the conflict". It considers it essential that a comprehensive cease-fire be effectively monitored as a matter of urgency, effectively monitored by observers accepted by both parties.
