Strasbourg, 21/05/2001 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday afternoon the European Parliament adopted a resolution on the attacks against human rights in Ethiopia, by denouncing in particular the brutality of the police forces against students last mid-April (which lead to between 31 and 41 deaths), the imprisonment of certain students, the decision to remove the "students councils" and the arrest of 110 opposition leaders, who are held, in secret, as well as Prof. Woldemariam, founder of the "Ethiopian human rights council", largest independent human rights organisation in Ethiopia. In the face of this deterioration in the situation, the Parliament calls in particular for the freeing of arrested persons (for the students, he adds: those which "are not perpetrators of violence") and calls on the European Union to support the inter-Ethiopian dialogue for peace and reconciliation.
