Strasbourg, 21/05/2001 (Agence Europe) - The EP denounced, in a resolution adopted during its topical debates last Thursday, the recent aggressions perpetrated by the Serb nationalists against Muslims that where laying the first stone for the renovation of the Ferhadija of Banja Luka mosque, as well as a similar incident that arose in Trebinje. The Parliament called on the authorities of the Republika Srpska to carry out an investigation on this issue, and called on the European Commission to "target, increase and reinforce" Community aid to Bosnia-Herzegovina aimed at the Communities that are working in favour of the reintegration of refugees and reconciliation, and to consider the possibility of suspending the EU payments to the authorities of the Republika Srpska, if they do not take the necessary measures to re-establish the confidence of the Bosnian and Croat minorities and to ensure peaceful cohabitation in the region. Commissioner Gunter Verheugen recalled that his colleague Chris Patten, who had been the same day to Bosnia, already condemned these serious incidents. He also re-affirmed that Bosnia-Herzegovina could have the prospect of integration into Europe, notably through a Stabilisation and Association agreement, only if it carries out the necessary "in-depth internal transformation". Mr Verheugen recalled that the aid given to Bosnia-Herzegovina through the CARDS programme is tied to conditions, but felt that, if this aid is interrupted, this risks encouraging extremists.
