Brussels, 03/05/2001 (Agence Europe) - In the context of the recent crises affecting the quality of food, Euro-Toques, European chefs' organisation, has called on European officials to adopt measures aimed at durably reestablishing the confidence link between consumers and food.
Following the adoption of the White Paper on food safety, Euro-Toques notes that this important goal was taken on board essentially from a health angle and the hygiene of foodstuffs. For the catering organisation, the EU cannot limit itself to the safety of food alone. It has also to be concerned with taste.
Euro-Toques considers that European agricultural production needs giving its proper value among consumers through new instruments that would highlight the organoleptic characteristics of products and the diversity of the product, as well as regional culinary traditions in Europe. It is a question, say the European chefs, of enhancing the consumers' capacity to appreciate the quality of the products they consume in the framework of a personal approach calling on their senses. Euro-Toques thus calls on European decision-makers for the notion of culture, taste and tradition to be an integral part of European food legislation.
