Parliament calls for reinforcing fight against counterfeiting

Brussels, 03/05/2001 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday, the European Parliament adopted the report by Avril Doyle (EPP-ED, Irish) on three proposals covering the organisation of a provision for the legal protection of Euro notes and coins against counterfeiting. They mainly aim to ensure the exchange of information and judicial cooperation between the competent authorities in the EU 15, Europol, the provisional bodies, while awaiting Eurojust and the third countries. The report recommends the creation in each of the Member State of a national centre for the analysis of counterfeits similar to the one that the European Central Bank has established at the European level. The EP feels that all the establishments handling and issuing money to the public on a professional basis should be forced to check the authenticity of notes and coins. Mrs Dolye also called in favour of the creation of an instrument in the framework of the third pillar to achieve the harmonisation of penal protection in the EU.
