Brussels, 02/05/2001 (Agence Europe) - On Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 May the European quarter of Brussels will be celebrating in commemoration of the Declaration by which Robert Schuman triggered European unification on 9 May 1950. On 5 May, the different European institutions (Commission, Parliament, Council, Economic and Social Committee, Committee of the Regions) will open their doors to the public. At the EP, which normally plays host to 626 MEPs, there is to be a debate in the morning in which Didier Reynders, Belgian Finance Minister and President-in-Office of the Eurogroup, is to take part as well as Euro-MPs. Three subjects will be tackled: the euro, the Belgian Presidency of the EU and the Charter of Fundamental Rights. From midday, the debate will be followed by an explanatory lecture on the EU and its institutions. In addition, the 370,000 square meters of the Parliament will greet a mass of stands: political groups, European institutions which do not have their headquarters in Brussels, as is the case for the EP (ECB, European Ombudsman, etc.), the European Movement, Infopoints-Europe of Belgian provinces, etc.. At the same time, many cultural events are planned (spectacles, photo exhibitions…).
