Brussels, 19/03/2001 (Agence Europe) - The Scientific Committee on Plants, which fulfils a role of advisor to the European Commission, has just published an opinion of the presence of genetically modified seeds in lots of "conventional" seeds. The seeds to be marketed are produced according to the regulatory requirements of the Union and its Member States which require the respect of certain standards concerning purity. It is thus that the seeds cannot be mixed: in principal there should not be any wheat seeds in a lot of rape seed. The Commission is presently examining the issue of purity requirement in the context of the appearance on the market of genetically modified seeds.
