Rasmussen opposed to imports of foreign labour in information technologies sector

Brussels, 21/02/2001 (Agence Europe) - Danish Prime Minister Poul Nyrup Rasmussen said he was opposed to the opening up of the EU borders to bring in information technology specialists from the third countries, as is suggested by the European Commission. Mr Rasmussen considers there are many unemployed "immigrants and refugees who have good qualifications" and that one should ensure that they are the ones who find work instead of discussing importing foreign but unnecessary labour". The shortage of highly qualified workers in information technologies has reached 800,000 in the EU and could reach the figure of 3 million by end 2003, European Employment Commissioner Anna Diamantopoulou had said last Friday, on the fringe of the informal meeting of employment and telecommunications ministers in Lulea, in Sweden.
