THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) eu/turkey/france

16/02/2001 (Agence Europe) - The chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Turkish Parliament, Kamran Inan, has been instructed to draw up a bill condemning different abuses committee by France. This retaliation to the adoption, by the French National assembly on 18 January, of a law recognising as genocide the massacres and deportations of Armenians perpetrated by the Ottoman Empire from 1915 to 1917, will take the form of three articles. One of the articles will concern the massacres that France is said to have committed when it occupied the Mars region (southern Anatolia) between the end of World war I and the creation of the Turkish Republic (1923), another on the massacres it is alleged to have perpetrated in Indochina and in Algeria, as well as its "complicity" in the genocide in Rwanda. A third article is said to denounce the moral responsibility of the "religious genocide" of Europe in the massacres in Bosnia and Nagorno-Karabakh, Azerbaijani territory with an Armenian majority disputing Armenia and Azerbaijan, allied to Turkey.
