Strasbourg, 16/02/2001 (Agence Europe) - The EP, in adopting a resolution on the situation in Guinea Conakry, noted that roughly 500,000 refugees which come from Sierra Leon and Liberia, as well as 70,000 Guineans displaced to the interior live in this country, and invited the European Commission to reinforce its humanitarian aid in favour of the refugees and to contribute more actively, with the High Commissioner for Refugees, in the return of the people concerned to their countries of origin. The EP welcomes the will shown by Guinea to provide aid to refugees from the region despite armed attacks of which it is a victim (the EP recalls that the Guinean government accuses Liberia of being the cause of these attacks, which were thought to have been perpetrated by the United Revolutionary Front from Sierra Leon and Guinean dissidents), but also calls on the Guinean government to punish those responsible for violence and harassment against the refugees.
