Strasbourg, 16/02/2001 (Agence Europe) - In a resolution adopted on Thursday, the EP condemned the attack which killed President Kabila and welcomed the efforts deployed by his son Joseph Kabila, new President of the Democratic Republic of Congo, in order to achieve conciliation in the country. The EP calls on Joseph Kabila to accept a timetable for the opening of a inter-Congolese dialogue and to organise free elections and calls on all the countries of the Great Lakes region to "renounce any activity direct4ed against a neighbouring country". Furthermore, it calls on the EU to take, without delay, political and economic measures necessary to guarantee the proper application of the Lusaka peace agreement, and invites the Member States to honour their undertakings in terms of armament export controls and the prevention of the sale of illegal arms.
