France's LAFARGE is to create a joint-venture with the Japanese cement manufacturer ASO (turnover of some 166 bn yen in 2000). The latter will provide its assets to the joint-venture that it will control to the tune of 60.6%, with LAFARGE holding the remainder. The assets in question are two cement plants with a total production capacity of 3 million tonnes a year.
