Professional organisation consider unacceptable TAC proposal and quotas for 2001

Brussels, 08/12/2000 (Agence Europe) - In a letter that have just sent to the French Agriculture Minister Jean Glavany and Commissioner Franz Fischler, the President of Europeche, Alain Parres, and Cogeca, Mario Campli, said he was concerned by the content of the European Commission proposals in terms of TAC and quotas (see EUROPE of 6 December, p.10). The two organisations feel that the fall in catches called for, notably for Cod, Whiting and Hake, are "excessively strong and brutal" and do not take into account the repeated calls by the sector to limit to 15% the variations from one year to the next and to foresee a multiannual approach. Europeche and Cogeca recall their position according to which any drastic limitation of the fishing effort beyond the "tolerance ceiling" of 15% must be the object of suitable financial compensation. The two organisations call for draconian proposals by the Commission to be made more supportable for fisherman and their companies.
