Brussels, 01/12/2000 (Agence Europe) - By adopting a resolution tabled by its Foreign Affairs Committee on the situation in Afghanistan, the European Parliament states that "the obscurantist ideology of the Talibans lies at the root of constant human rights violations in Afghanistan", and condemns the unacceptable policy of discrimination towards women on the territories under Taliban control. The EP also condemns foreign interference in Afghan affairs that fuels the war, in particular that of Pakistan, and calls on the UN Security Council to impose an embargo on the sale of weapons to the Talibans, and on the Pakistani authorities to cease any form of military assistance to the Talibans, be it means of command, recruitment or troop engagement. The EU Council is urged to step-up measures of restrictions adopted against the Taliban regime, and the European Commission to take the emergency humanitarian measures required and ensure their balance throughout the Afghan territory. Finally, the EP calls on the EU and its Member States to help set up a security zone in the northern provinces, to which the Talibans have so far not been able to extend their influence.
