Biarritz, 16/10/2000 (Agence Europe) - At the Biarritz Summit, President Jacques Chirac placed emphasis on the respect o the precautionary principle and the need to "irreversibly" engage, by the end of the year, in the process of creating a European Food authority. "The Presidency considers that the Food Authority is more than ever a priority", Chirac declared, at the first working session of the Heads of State or Government. He then added: "Food crises that we experience at European level or in each of our countries means that we must more froward quickly within the European Union on all aspects of food safety". He hoped for "complementary decisions" to "provide the precautionary principle its full sense".
