ETUC and NGO conference on fundamental rights

Brussels, 28/08/2000 (Agence Europe) - The European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) and the European Social NGO platform are organising, the 31 August and 1 September in Brussels, a Conference on the themes "Fundamental Rights: the heart of Europe". Some 150 participants from EU countries and candidate countries will, with representatives from European institutions, make an assessment of the wide ranging campaign, launched by the conference organisers to raise awareness by public opinion to the need for a "Europe for and on behalf of its citizens", which could notably be carried out through the integration of fundamental rights into the EU Treaty.

The works on 31 August will be divided into three sessions: 1) civil and political rights, 2) social and union rights, 3) implementation by EU: impact at legal level of action plan. The day of September 1st will be dedicated to conclusions and two roundtables, to which will participate representatives from the French Presidency, the European Parliament and the European Commission, covering the Convention that is drafting the Charter of Fundamental rights and the IGC.
