Brussels, 28/08/2000 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission gave its assent to the exclusive take over of the company Metsa Corrugated by SCA Packaging (Sweden). 100% subsidiary of Svenska Cellulosa AB, a Swedish company from the wood sector specialised in the manufacturing of hygiene products, packaging aimed at transport and graphic paper, SCA produces corrugated cases that it distributed throughout the EU. It has production factories in several Member States, Metsa Corrugated gather together several legal entities and manufactures corrugated cases in Lithuania, Estonia and Russia. The Commission concluded that this operation raises competition difficulties in Denmark, where the combined market share for corrugates cases would be very high. So as to alleviate these reservations, SCA undertakes to sell off to a viable competitor the activities of Neopack, Metsa subsidiary, as well as two bow making operations belonging to SCA packaging. A preliminary agreement has been made in this direction with the American company Jefferson Smurfitt that presently only has a very weak market share in the Danish market for cardboard boxes, while being a significant actor in the rest of Europe. The Commission feels that this arrangement, on condition that it is fully respected, is sufficient to maintain efficient competition in Denmark.
