In favour of tougher draft directive on noise

Brussels, 18/08/2000 (Agence Europe) - In a joint press release, the European Environmental Bureau (EEB) and the European Federation for Transport and Environment (T&E) state that the future directive on noise must "really do something for all citizens suffering from aircraft noise - independently on how big airports are". While stressing that the European Commission's draft directive improves the reporting requirement of Member States to provide a basis for setting regional and local noise reduction strategies, the EEB and T&E deplore the fact that the text does not introduce numerical values defining noise. They also demand the definition of sensitive areas and noise maps, as well as calling for neighbourhood noise and noise from industry, which appeared in earlier drafts, to be again included within the future directive's scope.
