Brussels, 28/03/2000 (Agence Europe) - Tuesday's Transport Council allowed "common denominators" to be reached on themes of interest for European citizens, which the Portuguese Presidency had mad a priority, said Council president Jorge Coelho after the Council. In addition to debates on Galileo and the reduction of aircraft pollution (see previous articles), the ministers prepared the ground for more detailed discussion in June on maritime and road safety, giving their overall support to Commission proposals. They adopted, without discussion, the "common position" on the "rail package" defined in December and agreed to continue work already well under way on the "interoperability" directive for rail which may be adopted in June. They supported the European Commission's intention to launch an information campaign on air passengers' rights. Furthermore, the Council plans to adopt in June a decision on legal reform of the future European air safety office.
