Copenhagen, 10/03/2000 (Agence Europe) - The Danish Prime Minister Poul Nyrup Rasmussen announced that the referendum on Denmark's adhesion to the Euro-area will take place on the 28 September. Mr. Rasmussen said he hoped "to get a "yes"" believing that the entry into the third phase of Economic and Monetary Union is "the best thing that can happen to Denmark." The announcement was made after and emergency meeting of the Executive and parliamentarian Committee of the Social Democrat Party (Mr. Rasmussen's party). A meeting that was called following pressure also from the opposition so that the planned referendum would take place as quickly as possible. During the same meeting, the Social Democrat Party called for the 30 April a special congress solely on EMU. Mr. Rasmussen announced the starting of a public debate on the Euro in view of a referendum at the end of September.
