Stenzel satisfied with her "constructive" visit to Malta

Brussels, 29/02/2000 (Agence Europe) - ÖVP Member of the EP Ursula Stenzel, rapporteur for Malta's negotiations for EU accession, states in a press release following a visit to Valletta that the Government of Malta has presented a "very ambitious programme" for adoption of the Community acquis. The Austrian MEP, who met Foreign Minister Borg and Labour opposition leader Mr Vella, along with representatives of economic interests, commented: "There is no question of isolating Austria here". On the contrary, in her view, the reaction of the Fourteen to the entry of the FPÖ in the government is seen as "greatly exaggerated" in Malta and the conduct of the Fourteen "strengthens mistrust of Europe" among those opposed to their country's accession to the European Union. "In Malta, it is feared that this example might gain widespread acceptance and that the big states will devour the small ones with fewer and fewer scruples", states Mrs Stenzel in the press release.
