Creation of a group of representatives of Parliament and the advertising sector on commercial communications

Brussels, 29/02/2000 (Agence Europe) - The European Advertising Tripartite (EAT) has announced the creation of a mixed discussion group that includes Members of the EP and representatives of the advertising industry. Chaired by Belgian Liberal Eduard Beysen, this group will monitor and follow up measures proposed by the European Commission in its 1997 Green Paper on Commercial Communications.

EAT Secretary General Florence Ranson stated as the group was launched that the sector represents EUR 140 billion. Lionel Stanbrook (UK Advertising Association) reiterated that "the single market in commercial communications is not working" and that the sector "needs to continue to support the Commission and the Parliament in their efforts, particularly since we know that most obstacles come from Member States themselves".

The future meetings of the group will be held in Brussels and Strasbourg. They will concern: (1) the importance of advertising in media plurality, (2) commercial communications and the new media, and (3) children and commercial communications.
