Brussels, 27/01/2000 (Agence Europe) - On the occasion of the "L'Altra Meta del Cinema" conference organised in Rome on 21 and 22 January by Cinecittá Holding, and, among others, the European Federation of Audiovisual Film Makers (FERA) and the conference of Spanish-American cinema authorities (CICA), the assembly called on the European Union to set up a programme for assistance and levelling on intellectual property matters in Latin America such as that set up in the context of the Phare and Tacis programmes".
The aim of this programme would be to form a stronger link between Latin America and the Union, and to envisage greater economic and cultural cooperation in the audiovisual and cinema sectors, in order to remedy the great poverty of Latin America in these areas as compared to the United States' industry.
The assembly declared, moreover, that the continental copyright, the respect of justice and democracy and human rights are elements that Europe must, in agreement with its Community acquis, claim as values of a global humanist civilisation that must be a basis for the Information Society.
