Brussels, 27/01/2000 (Agence Europe) - Setting the limits on maximum alcohol levels at the wheel is the responsibility of Member States, Commissioner Loyola da Palacio told the EP's Transport Committee on Thursday. Questioned about concrete measures regarding road safety the Commission intended taking, she said that the question of alcohol came under subsidiarity, thereby brushing aside the arguments of the MEPs and the NGO European Transport Council who have been campaigning for a year for the EU to align alcohol levels at the 0.5mg/ml, level currently applied in most Member States except four, which apply a level of 0.8mg/ml. Loyola da Palacio did however say that the European Commission would continue to work on the harmonisation of the industrial characteristics of vehicles, notably to protect pedestrians in case of a head-on collision. She confirmed that the Commission would soon be presenting a communication on road transport safety.
