24/06/2026 (Agence Europe) – On Wednesday 24 June the European Commission announced the entry into force of the revised European directive aimed at facilitating the exercise of the right to vote and the right to stand as a candidate in municipal elections for European Union citizens residing in another Member State (see EUROPE 13874/21). The text requires Member States to provide in good time clear information on voting procedures, the rights of voters and candidates, and the dates of the elections in at least one widely understood language. It also simplifies procedures for registration on the electoral rolls and guarantees mobile citizens access to the same voting arrangements as nationals. According to figures put forward by the European Commission, around 14 million European citizens now live in another Member State. (NP)
