24/06/2026 (Agence Europe) – On Wednesday 24 June, the European Commission appointed Martin Špolc director for prosperity at the Directorate-General for Research and Innovation (DG RTD). This department is responsible for EU policy on research, science and innovation, with a view to contributing to growth and job creation and addressing the main societal challenges. The date on which the decision will take effect will be specified at a later stage, according to a press release. Martin Špolc, a Czech national, is currently head of the ‘Preparedness and Adaptation to Climate Change’ unit at the Directorate-General for Climate Action (DG CLIMA). He previously served as head of the ‘Sustainable Finance’ unit, head of the ‘Capital Markets Union’ unit and head of the ‘Economic Analysis and Evaluation’ unit at the Directorate-General for Financial Stability, Financial Services and Capital Markets Union (DG FISMA).
