European Commission says it has put “robust safeguards” in place to prevent conflict of interest linked to special envoy for AI

04/06/2026 (Agence Europe)The European Commission said that its new special envoy for industrial artificial intelligence, Jim Hagemann Snabe, will suspend his participation in several boards on which he sits – including those of C3.ai and Google Cloud – for the duration of his term, which runs until March 2027. “We have also put in place specific safeguards to limit the risks of conflicts of interest”, once he leaves his post at the European Commission and could return to working in industry. On Thursday 4 June – without giving details in response to questions about the risks of conflicts of interest, given Mr Hagemann Snabe’s links with the technology sector – the European Commission spokesperson Balázs Ujvári added that his role would be to “help maximise” the transformative potential of AI in European industrial sectors. He will also submit a forward-looking, evidence-based report to the European Commission, together with operational recommendations. (APH)
