04/06/2026 (Agence Europe) – On Thursday, 4 June, the European Commission approved a €25 million Spanish State aid scheme that intends to support fishing companies facing the steep rise in fuel prices related to the crisis in the Middle East. The scheme was approved under the temporary State aid framework that was adopted on 29 April. The support concerns companies that are active in the primary production of fishery products, and it will remain in effect until this coming 31 December. The aid will take the form of direct grants—in the amount of €0.20 per litre of diesel purchased between 22 March and 30 June 2026. It is capped at €200,000 per vessel and €400,000 per shipowner and can cover up to 70% of additional fuel costs. The European Commission decided that the scheme was necessary, appropriate, and proportionate, holding the view that it does not distort competition in such a way that is contrary to the common interest.
