The leaders of the B9 countries - Bulgaria, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Slovakia and the Czech Republic, with Hungary abstaining in a constructive vote - and the Nordic ally countries stressed, in a joint statement issued at the end of a Summit in Bucharest, that strengthening security was their “primary strategic objective”.
They emphasised their shared commitment to strengthening security and defence cooperation across NATO’s eastern flank and their determination to make NATO 3.0 a reality “by advancing a stronger Europe in a stronger NATO”.
Agreeing that Russia “is and will remain the most significant, long-term and direct threat to Allies’ security”, the leaders expressed their determination to ensure that the Alliance’s defence plans are adequately resourced and to meet the targets set for capabilities, military mobility, and support. They also stressed the urgency of further strengthening air and missile defence, and the need to protect critical maritime infrastructure, guarantee freedom of navigation and strengthen the transatlantic defence industrial base.
