In response to war in Middle East, Spain and Italy advocate a relaxation of EU fiscal rules

On Friday 24 April, the Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, proposed a relaxation of the European Union’s fiscal rules to facilitate public investment in decarbonisation and electrification, along the lines of what was introduced in 2025 to increase military spending.
