EU support for Slovakia’s milk and pigmeat sectors following cases of foot-and-mouth disease

The Member States have approved the European Commission’s proposal to mobilise €2.1 million in exceptional support for the Slovak dairy and pigmeat sectors, the Commission announced on Friday 24 April.

These sectors were severely affected by the impact of the foot-and-mouth disease outbreaks in March and April last year.

The measure is designed to mitigate the loss of income suffered by farmers as a result of the movement restrictions and longer rearing periods imposed to contain the disease.

The support will compensate farmers for undelivered raw milk, prolonged fattening periods for pigs and extended or delayed rearing of piglets and sows.

Slovakia quickly brought the outbreaks under control by implementing the emergency measures provided for under European animal health legislation (movement bans and surveillance zones). The Commission’s intervention guarantees rapid support for farmers, with payments to beneficiaries to be made by 30 September 2026 at the latest. (Original version in French by Lionel Changeur)
