08/04/2026 (Agence Europe) – Environmental organisations, including the European Environmental Bureau (EEB), expressed their concern on Wednesday 8 April about a private meeting in Stockholm between the European Commissioner for the Environment, Jessika Roswall, and lobbyists from the Swedish mining industry. The aim of the meeting was to discuss the future of the Water Framework Directive (2000/60/EC), which protects drinking water, rivers and lakes, while strengthening climate resilience. The NGOs deplore the fact that no environmental organisation or civil society representative has been invited. Experts are warning of the risks of long-term pollution associated with mining, threatening local health, biodiversity and livelihoods for short-term industrial gain. (LC)
