Following EU, several countries push for a global digital age of consent

While the subject stirs debate in Europe, the digital age of consent issue is expected to be taken to the world stage by France, which aspires to take the lead on this initiative (see EUROPE 13808/4).

In an interview with the French daily newspaper Le Figaro on 3 April, Clara Chappaz, ambassador for digital affairs and artificial intelligence, said she wanted a “global standard banning the use of social networks before a certain age”.

The issue will also be on the agenda for the mid-June G7 summit in Evian. For his part, the Australian ambassador, whose country was the first to actually implement this measure, said that “countries should get behind a global movement to shift the norms and laws around how kids use social media”, according to the news organisation POLITICO.

In recent months, France, followed by Spain, Denmark, the Netherlands and, outside the EU, the UK, have signalled their intention to introduce a ban on social media access for minors, thereby following in Canberra’s footsteps. (Original version in French by Isalia Stieffatre)
