07/04/2026 (Agence Europe) – On Tuesday 7 April, the European Commission launched the opening of applications for the 2027 European Capitals of Tourism award. Tourist destinations from all over Europe are invited to present their most innovative and sustainable initiatives, according to a press release. The first category is open to destinations with more than 100,000 inhabitants and rewards excellence in sustainability, accessibility, digitalisation, cultural heritage and creativity. A second category is open to destinations with a population of between 25,000 and 100,000 and rewards smaller destinations that stand out for their leading role in sustainable tourism. The initiative highlights destinations that implement innovative solutions in areas such as digitalisation, accessibility and sustainable development, as well as providing support for cultural heritage, creativity and local talent.
