Brussels, 07/04/2026 (Agence Europe) – In a press release on Tuesday 7 April, French MEP Christophe Clergeau (S&D) criticised a number of major European petrochemical companies, including “TotalEnergies, Arkema and BASF, for choosing not to include the environmental effects of producing hazardous chemicals in their reports”. The European Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) “requires large companies to publish precise information on their environmental and social impacts. It is an essential lever for guaranteeing the transparency and accountability of economic players”. These companies “wrongly consider that these elements do not fall within their transparency obligations”. “Environmental transparency is not an option. This is a legal obligation and a democratic requirement. What these companies are doing today is deliberately organising opacity,” denounces the elected representative, calling on the European Commission and the Member States “to enforce the regulations in force strictly and without delay”.
