EU renews its partnership with Pacific Community to protect oceans

Brussels, 27/02/2026 (Agence Europe)On Friday 27 February, the European Union renewed its partnership with the Pacific Community (SPC), the Pacific Islands Forum Fisheries Agency (FFA) and the University of the South Pacific (USP). The €20 million ‘PEUMP II’ programme, the second phase of the Pacific-EU Marine Partnership, will run until 2030, benefiting Pacific island countries and Timor-Leste. It aims to strengthen maritime governance, support the fishing industry and combat illegal fishing. “This agreement between our two regions – which collectively represent almost 40 countries is a powerful demonstration of our shared, long-term commitment to the ocean – a clear signal that, despite our different geographies, we are united by a common purpose and a shared responsibility to protect and sustainably manage our oceans”, said the EU Ambassador to the Pacific, Barbara Plinkert, in Suva (Fiji). (BD)
