According to a report published by the European Commission on Thursday 12 February, the European Union is making significant progress towards its global biodiversity targets, but swifter action remains vital to protect natural systems (see EUROPE 13590/4).
The EU’s seventh national report on biodiversity (https://aeur.eu/f/koy ) shows that the EU has made progress towards the 45 targets under Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF), two of which have already been achieved, notably the target on the restoration of degraded ecosystems.
A detailed, target-by-target assessment of progress can be found in Annex III of the Commission staff working document. It will be uploaded in the next few days to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) online tool.
The European targets, submitted to the CBD in August 2024, reflect EU legislation and are fully aligned with the 23 global targets adopted at the 15th Conference of the Parties (COP15) in 2022.
All Parties to the CBD are due to report on their progress by the end of February. These reports will feed into a Global Review of Implementation at COP17, scheduled for October in Armenia. (Original version in French by Lionel Changeur)
