European Commission consults on competitiveness of EU banking sector

On Thursday 12 February, the European Commission launched a public consultation aimed at taking the pulse of the European banking sector, with a view to its communication on the competitiveness of European banks, announced for the third quarter of 2026 (see EUROPE 13772/5).

We want to hear from stakeholders how the current framework works in practice, where it can be simplified, and how it can better support cross-border activity, innovation and the financing of Europe’s economy”, said Maria Luís Albuquerque, European Commissioner for Financial Services.

In its consultation document, the Commission seeks feedback on: - the way the banking industry finances the real economy; - factors ensuring a level playing field at international level; - the level of cross-border consolidation in the banking market; - the desirability of strengthening deposit guarantees; - how to simplify banking prudential rules.

Stakeholders have until 19 April to take part in the public consultation: https://aeur.eu/f/kpc; and until 12 March to respond to a specific call for evidence: https://aeur.eu/f/kpd (Original version in French by Mathieu Bion)
