21/01/2026 (Agence Europe) – On Wednesday 21 January, the European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO) announced that it had ordered an arrest in Poland as part of an investigation into members of a religious group suspected of fraud involving funds intended for food aid. At the request of the EPPO in Katowice, the Anti-Corruption Bureau has arrested a new suspect in Łódź. According to the investigation, the association received 2,500 tonnes of foodstuffs worth more than €3.7 million, intended for refugees, homeless people and the most destitute as part of the 2021-2027 Food Aid Programme. This aid, provided by the National Agricultural Support Centre, was 90% co-financed by the European Social Fund Plus (ESF+). Some of the food was allegedly sold illegally. The investigation, taken over by the EPPO in May 2025, had already led to six arrests. All suspects are presumed innocent. (NP)
