Euro area countries adopt their work programme up to June 2026

On Friday 19 September in Copenhagen, the finance ministers of the euro area countries adopted their work programme up to June 2026.

The Eurogroup will continue its task of coordinating the economic and fiscal policies of the Member States with a view to preparing budgets for 2026 and 2027. It does not rule out further “adjustments” to the EU’s fiscal rules after the 2024 reform of the Stability and Growth Pact.

It will pursue the ambition of strengthening the attractiveness of the euro area as a trading and reserve currency, in an environment marked by geopolitical and trade tensions. In particular, the Eurogroup will contribute to the ECB’s project to set up a digital euro (see other news).

Internally, the ministers will aim to deepen Economic and Monetary Union and make progress on banking union and the integration of European capital markets. In particular, they will discuss the challenges weighing on the competitiveness of the banking sector with a view to a specific report by the European Commission due in 2026.
