On Monday 30 June, the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, and the Armenian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ararat Mirzoyan, announced the strengthening of cooperation between the EU and Armenia.
Speaking to the media in Yerevan, the two leaders announced a political agreement on the new EU-Armenia partnership agenda, which identifies priorities for cooperation in the fields of economic development, security and resilience. “This is an ambitious document that will complement and deepen the Armenia-EU bilateral programme with new areas of cooperation, while promoting the effective implementation of the Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership Agreement between Armenia and the European Union”, explained the Minister. The launch of work on this new agenda was announced in February (see EUROPE 13349/21).
The High Representative also announced that the European Commission had adopted its proposal for an action plan on visa liberalisation for Armenians. In September 2024, the EU and Yerevan began a dialogue on liberalisation (see EUROPE 13478/7) and Armenia has already benefited from facilitation since 2014.
Mr Mirzoyan highlighted the launch of a consultation in the security and defence sectors, “a crucial step towards adapting [the] cooperation framework to current challenges and redoubling efforts to meet them”. He highlighted the cooperation between the EU and Armenia to strengthen his country’s resilience and the development of democratic institutions, including the fight against threats and disinformation.
The two parties also signed a framework agreement enabling Armenia to contribute to EU missions around the world and defining its participation in EU crisis management actions. (Original version in French by Camille-Cerise Gessant)
