A coalition of organisations is calling on European Commission to take urgent action to defend right to freedom of assembly in Hungary

22/04/2025 (Agence Europe)In a joint letter published on 16 April, a coalition of LGBTI and human rights organisations, including the European branch of the International Lesbian and Gay Association (ILGA-Europe), called on the European Commission to take urgent action in response to restrictions on freedom of assembly in Hungary, in particular against ‘gay pride’ marches. The letter, addressed to Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Executive Vice-President Henna Virkkunen, and Commissioners Michael McGrath and Hadja Lahbib, calls for either a provisional measure before 27 May, the deadline for registering the Pride march in Budapest with the Hungarian authorities to prevent it from being banned, or action under the infringement procedure against the anti-LGBTI law, or a new procedure. They warn that “the risk of serious and irreparable harm is imminent”.
