Digital and tech industry urges Donald Trump to oppose European AI regulations

In a letter dated 12 March, several major digital and technology lobbies, including the CCIA and the US Chamber of Commerce, call on the US administration and US President Donald Trump to oppose foreign regulations that could “impede U.S. AI innovators and deployers”.

The signatories believe that the US should “assertively engage foreign governments to deter adoption of detrimental AI policies that weaken U.S. AI leadership”.

In their view, the United States absolutely must maintain its position, by guaranteeing full access to foreign markets and by leading the regulatory policy train - i.e. a policy that is open and less strict than that of its competitors.

The European Union is implementing its highly prescriptive and overarching AI rules that burden U.S. innovation, which creates risks that other countries will look to this approach as a global template for AI regulation”, the letter warns.

It calls on the US to “shape the AI and digital agenda at all major international fora” and not “leave the field to others”.

By way of example, the signatories declare their opposition to policies that oppose the cross-border transfer of data.

The new Trump administration has already criticised the EU for over-regulating AI and its development (see EUROPE 13577/12) and threatened to impose tariffs in retaliation for the EU enforcing its various digital regulations (see EUROPE 13586/2).
