In a new report published on Thursday 6 March, the European association of Distribution System Operators (DSO Entity) and the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity (ENTSO-E) have stressed that, in the context of rapid transformation of the electricity sector, a collaborative approach is needed to standardise data, improve cybersecurity, and enhance network efficiency.
The report highlights the main challenges faced by Transmission System Operators (TSOs) and Distribution System Operators (DSOs) in implementing ‘digital twins’ (DTs) – virtual replicas of physical systems – to improve monitoring, forecasting and decision-making throughout the lifecycle of electricity network assets.
These DTs offer benefits such as improved network visibility, optimised operations and accelerated integration of renewable energies.
Future work will focus on developing a roadmap to guide the coordinated implementation of DTs across the European electricity system.
