European Court of Human Rights rejects a request to halt arms sales to Israel by Germany and United Kingdom

26/02/2025 (Agence Europe)On Wednesday 26 February, the European Court of Human Rights announced that it had rejected a request for “interim measures” to order Germany and the United Kingdom to stop supplying arms to Israel. The request was made by a Palestinian doctor who reportedly lives in Gaza and claims that members of his family have been killed or injured in Israeli attacks. The Court, in the unanimous opinion of a Chamber of seven judges, considers that this request does not fall within the scope of Rule 39 of its Rules governing ‘interim measures’. Applicable where there is an imminent risk of irreparable harm to a right protected by the European Convention on Human Rights, they are reserved for specific areas, essentially expulsion and extradition cases where the person concerned is exposed to the risk of the death penalty or torture.
